17 July 2007 Britons 'heading to exotic holiday destinations' Britons are packing their bags and heading abroad to "far-flung" holiday destinations in increasing numbers, it has been claimed.
Online travel firm lastminute.com has reported that Britons are becoming more likely to travel to exotic countries such as Kenya and Thailand, while noting a 34 per cent increase in trips taken through the company to the Maldives.
It states that these countries' reliance on tourist income has resulted in the improved affordability of four and five star holidays offering good value to holidaymakers.
John Bevan, managing director at the company, said: "We are seeing some really interesting shifts in trends this year where our customers are abandoning the traditional resorts in favour of more exotic and far-flung locations."
He added that the major factors resulting in this trend include low fares, the weakness of the dollar and a rising desire for luxury abroad.
In 2004, annual travel insurance provider American Express reported that the Maldives were the ninth-favoured dream holiday destination for Britons, while the stunning scenery of the Lord of the Rings trilogy may have helped New Zealand reach the top spot on the list.
