12 May 2006 British workers' holiday scandal
More than half a million British employees, many of whom have taken out travel insurance policies, have taken more annual leave than they're entitled to, without their company's knowledge over the last two years, according to a report by insurance company Direct Line.
The survey found that one in ten workers had "pulled a sickie" in order to extend holidays and perhaps make the most of their annual travel insurance while four per cent of people have paid their employers for more days of annual holiday.
Business manager at Direct Line travel insurance, Chris Price, commented: "It is surprising to see how many British workers feel that they do not have enough days' leave and are willing to call in sick to pad out their holiday entitlements.
"For those who travel often, it may be worthwhile taking out annual travel insurance which provides unlimited cover - this is especially useful if, as the survey suggests, many Britons are cash-rich but time-poor and may struggle to organise travel insurance for individual trips."
According to figures from the Trades Union Congress (TUC) British employees have among the least amount of annual leave in Europe, having on average 20 days a year while countries such as France, Sweden and Finland all enjoy 36 or more days holiday annual.
