02 March 2006 Boarder presumed dead after avalanche A snowboarder has been presumed dead after he became buried in snow during an avalanche.
Severe weather conditions are said to be hampering efforts to find 24-year-old Brendan Smart, who was out boarding with two other men when the avalanche struck.
The three men were at Marmot Mountain at Hatcher Pass, about 50 miles north of Anchorage in Alaska.
Both surviving men were carrying avalanche beacons but were unable to locate Mr Smart's signal. It is not know whether he had his beacon on him.
Skiers and snowboarders are continually advised to ensure that they are fully aware of any risks and covered by annual travel insurance before they take to the slopes.
Earlier this week a boarder managed to survive a night at -15 degrees C by putting his practical skills into action and digging himself a snow hole when he became lost on a mountainside in Bulgaria.
