19 July 2007 Biofuel 'too expensive for airlines at present'
Holidaymakers with an interest in reducing their carbon footprint while continuing to travel to far-flung destinations may have to wait a few years yet before they can take advantage of the potential of biofuels to power their flights.
The United Kingdom Petroleum Industry Association (UKPIA) reports that the conversion of biomass to liquids (BTL) method of replacing jet fuel for aircrafts is cleaner than regular fuel in terms of carbon emissions.
However, it warned that there still exists a significant carbon footprint as a result of manufacturing biofuels in the first place, while such fuel is still relatively expensive at present.
Malcolm Watson, technical director of the UKPIA, said: "The problem isn't producing enough to power one aircraft; that could be done.
"It's producing enough to power a significant part of the world’s fleet of jet aircraft."
He added that it was as yet uncertain when BTL technology would be available on a commercial scale.
In May 2007, annual travel insurance firm AA Financial Services reported that many Britons are opting to holiday in the UK rather than fly abroad in order to do their bit for the environment.
