29 August 2007 Beach holidaymakers get safety warning
Britons have been advised to stay safe when on the beach, as a recently-published report claims that the variable summer weather has led to more risk-taking from holidaymakers at sea.
Research from the Maritime and Coastguard Agency reveals that 56 per cent of Britons are less likely to act responsibly when the sun comes out in the hope of making the most of the good weather while it lasts.
Peter Dymond, chief coastguard, said: "Because of the wet summer, people are keen to take advantage of any sporadic hot weather when it arrives - particularly on our beaches and in the sea."
He gave a specific warning to parents of younger children, warning holidaymakers of the risk of getting swept out to see and the dangers of tombstoning.
Last month, Direct Line urged Britons on domestic breaks to not be given a false sense of security by the familiarity of their surroundings and to remember to purchase travel insurance to cover their UK-break.
