28 July 2006 Annual travellers warned to check allowances
Holidaymakers planning to bring cigarettes, alcohol and other produce back into the UK from their annual holidays this summer are being warned to be aware of their allowance limits, as they are of their travel insurance policy.
HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) in an attempt to stop illegal importing of goods and possible fines is urging travellers to "know before you go" and check what can and cannot be brought back into the country legally.
All tobacco, alcohol and any goods from outside the EU must be for personal consumption, any travellers with goods suspected as being for resale, whether covered by annual travel insurance or not, will be confiscated and possibly even the vehicle used to transport them.
Everything ranging from plants, seeds and food stuffs to guns and drugs are covered by rules and restrictions.
Director of HMRC frontiers, Kevin Franklin, commented: "As well as finding people with excess cigarettes or alcohol, every year we confiscate ivory, snakeskin and crocodile belts and bags, weapons, counterfeit designer goods, and meat and dairy produce.
"The people carrying these goods are often not determined smugglers - they are just completely unaware of the rules, only recently a traveller arrived at Newcastle Airport with a whole pig's head and trotters in his baggage."
