Annual travel insurance needed to cover 'British bravado'

26 January 2006 Annual travel insurance needed to cover 'British bravado' Bravado on the slopes causes one in ten British skiers to have an accident while on holiday, according to new research.
Conducted by Direct Line Travel Insurance, the survey also found that 71 per cent of skiers admit to attempting runs that are too difficult for them to handle as a result of peer pressure and the fear of being left behind.
A lack of physical preparation in the weeks prior to a skiing or snowboarding holiday contributes to the number of accidents each year, which can prove costly for travellers without multi-trip travel insurance.
Despite the fact that more than a third of all skiers and snowboarders have been involved in incidents, 11 per cent of which were serious, 18 per cent still take to the slopes without any travel insurance.
Commenting on the findings, Chris Price, head of Direct Line Travel, said: "The very nature of skiing and snowboarding means you're putting yourself at a greater risk than you would be on a beach holiday.
"It's important not to take unnecessary risks, though, whether by tackling runs that are too difficult for you or not preparing yourself physically in advance."
Research released this week revealed that the average claim for medical expenses totalled £1,200.
