23 December 2005 Annual travel insurance advice issued
Many people are taking a big financial risk by failing to take out an annual multi-trip travel insurance policy, according to advice issued by American Express.
Although Britons took 65.6 million trips last year, 14 per cent of these excursions were made without having any travel insurance cover.
After a survey conducted by American Express Travel Insurance found that the vast majority of respondents had suffered from some form if illness while on holiday, the company has issued advice to those planning a holiday abroad.
"Apart from skiing in Europe, Britons tend to travel further afield at this time of year to find the sun. Without good travel insurance literally millions are at risk from expensive medical bills," Joanne Field, marketing manager for American Express, said.
"Travel insurance is an essential part of holiday pricing and not a luxury extra to be ignored - we would encourage everyone to travel with comprehensive emergency medical cover which a good travel insurance policy provides."
The most common forms of illness identified by the survey were stomach upsets, sunburn and severe insect bites.
