25 November 2005 Americans realise growing travel insurance need
Events over the past few years have led more Americans to purchase travel insurance than before September 11th, according to the US Travel Insurance Association.
Leisure travellers are increasingly preparing for the worst, with 30 per cent of travellers spending more than $1 billion on travel insurance last year. Before September 11th just ten per cent bought insurance, reports the Chicago Sun-Times.
"People are becoming more aware of the kinds of things that can get between you and a good vacation," said Jon Ansell, president of the Insurance Association.
Risk awareness is higher because of terrorism, bad weather and airline bankruptcies, as Mr Ansell commented: "All the things that can go wrong with you at home can go wrong when you're away, plus other things."
On the basis of this Mr Ansell advises buying annual travel insurance for frequent travellers, as even if the local health care is good there are numerous costs involved as a foreigner.
