09 July 2007 'Alarming' figures of uninsured travellers
Recently-published research has revealed that an "alarming" number of Britons are heading abroad without purchasing single-trip or annual travel insurance.
Figures from a Post Office survey show that 47 per cent of people admit to heading abroad without any travel cover, with Londoners more likely to take a risk, 55 per cent of whom admit to taking at least one holiday without insurance.
The firm has temporarily cut its own prices on annual travel insurance in an attempt to ensure more Britons purchase cover before their summer holiday this year.
Kevin McAdam, head of travel at the company, said: "The amount of people who have admitted to going on holiday with any cover at all is extremely alarming.
"Our figures prove that travel insurance is all too often forgotten in the excitement of getting ready to go on holiday, or even worse, it is considered by some to be non-essential."
He added that dealing with simple problems abroad - such as a doctor's visit or lost possessions - can result in expenses of hundreds of pounds.
In July 2006, swiftcover.com estimated that 2.5 million Britons had travelled abroad the year before without purchasing travel insurance.
