13 July 2006 Airports putting Brits billions out-of-pocket
In a bid to get rid of excess foreign currency the average British holidaymaker has spent £182.77 in airports over the last five years, a new report reveals.
The survey, conducted by Halifax travel insurance, found that British travellers have spent £4 billion on unplanned airport purchases, with £817 million pounds of that spent in order to use up left over currency, since 2001.
Men are the worst offenders on average spending 65 per cent more in airports, to get rid of foreign currency, than women.
Senior underwriter at Halifax travel insurance, Vicky Emmott, said: "annual travel insurance policies are now available from as little as £243, less than the amount frittered away in airports by holidaymakers.
"With over half of British adults admitting to travelling without travel insurance it appears millions of holidaymakers are throwing away money that could have been invested in insurance to protect them during their trip, choosing instead to buy perfume, alcohol, food and souvenirs."
Holidaymakers also are more frivolous with their credit cards while on holiday the survey reveals, with billions being put onto cards after local currency runs out, according to Halifax.
A recent report by Swiftcover.com found that around 2.5 million Brits are putting themselves at further financial risk by not taking out travel insurance before they go abroad.
