31 July 2007 Airlines 'sceptical' over APD increases
Since February 2007, frequent fliers - such as passengers with annual travel insurance - have been shelling out more money in the form of taxes following increases to Air Passenger Duty (APD) in the UK.
A leading airline has expressed scepticism regarding the motives of this increase, claiming that the funds procured have not been spent on reducing climate change.
British Airways has described the tax as an unpopular one, claiming that, without money being spent on reducing the impact of aviation on the environment, APD may be viewed as merely another source of revenue for the exchequer.
A spokesperson for the firm said: "The percentage of tax on a ticket sounds pretty high if you're flying to the US, for example.
"I can't imagine that it's particularly popular."
He added that passengers are increasingly aware of environmental issues, but stated that the popularity of APD would continue to remain low if the money raised through the levy is not set aside for tackling climate change.
In May 2007, AA Financial Services reported that increasing numbers of Britons are planning on forgoing air travel and instead take a driving or domestic break as a result of environmental concerns.
