23 September 2006  Airlines back new security regulations
Airlines have supported a relaxation of security regulations introduced at last month which could assist travellers, some looking to take advantage of their annual travel insurance, heading abroad for short breaks.

easyJet welcomed the move, but has requested a further review on the increased regulations still in place.

Under the revised rules, passengers are now permitted to take one item of cabin baggage, of a maximum size of 56 cm by 45 cm by 25cm, with liquids other than baby milk, liquid baby food and medicines still being banned.

Musicians, some who expressed fears that their single or multi-trip insurance would not adequately cover expensive instruments stored in the hold, will be able to carry on musical instruments as an extra piece of baggage after screening - even if it exceeds the maximum size above.

Andy Harrison, chief executive at easyJet, said: "This is good news for the travelling public, who have borne the brunt of the disruption in the last few weeks. Those taking short trips will be particularly pleased.

"We hope our passengers will soon be allowed to take their own liquids and a second bag, such as a laptop, into the cabin."

Flybe also welcomed the relaxation, though expressed that they felt the move was "long overdue".
