28 June 2007 Airline calls time on traditional package holiday
A low-fares airline has established its own holiday service for customers that it claims will mark the death knell for the traditional package holiday.
Newly-launched easyJet Holidays claims to offer holidaymakers the opportunity to choose from over 900 flights every day to 75 destinations in Europe and in excess of 10,000 hotels.
The company aims to provide flexible and customisable trips where holidaymakers have the freedom to select their own combination of flight and accommodation.
Andy Harrison, chief executive of easyJet, said: "Package holidays offered through travel agents and tour operators have developed a deserved reputation for everything that is bad about travel."
He cited inflexible holiday lengths, poor quality accommodation and inconvenient transport on unknown airlines as the major difficulties with traditional package holidays.
Direct Line recently welcomed a government decision to put the sale of single-trip or annual travel insurance bought through travel agents under the regulatory purview of the Financial Services Authority.
